Welcome to the Beautiful Flower Box

a place to enjoy a small collection of holy cards made in Spain.

I had visited online shops in Europe for many years where I found old holy cards from France, Italy, the Netherlands and other countries in the EU. Then one day, I happened on a site in Barcelona where, to my surprise, I discovered many of the familiar compositions re-envisioned in a way that was almost angelic.

Captivated by the unique warmth and gentleness of the renderings and the compelling turn of thought in many of them, I was drawn to them as as to no others I had ever found. Small in number, home-grown, and intimate, they carry the message of heaven in a way that is disarmingly simple.

Unlike most holy cards, no publisher or city of publication was given for most of them, and the backs were left blank for inscription. "Made in Spain" was often the only publication statement, but the dates on the inscriptions place their brief appearance in the fervent years following the Spanish Civil War.

Grateful for these treasures of the faith, little circulated outside of their homeland, I gather The Beautiful Flower Box to share them with others.
